The Department of Electrical Engineering at King Abdulaziz University (KAU) was established simultaneously with the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering in 1974. The academic activities in the department started in the academic year 1975-76.
Initially, the department had three programs: Electrical Power and Machines Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, and Computer and Controls Engineering. In 1982, the Biomedical Engineering Program was established.
